17 year old Savitha Shri recently scored her final IM norm at the 40th Andorra Open to become the latest International Master from India. The tournament took place from July 20th-28th, 2024. Savitha scored 6 points in the first 8 rounds to clinch the norm with a round to spare. Her only loss of the event was in the final round against Ukrainian GM Andrey Sumets.


Second IM Norm
In June 2023, Savitha earned her second IM norm at the Norway Chess Open in Stavanger. After securing her norm in the first 9 rounds, she continued to display her fighting spirit, defeating IM Fredrik Tor Kaasen with the white pieces in the final round. With this, Savitha finished in joint second place in the tournament. She also won the prize for the best female player of the tournament.
First IM Norm
Savitha scored her first IM norm in April 2023 at the Fagernes Chess Festival. She scored 5 points in 9 rounds and finished in the 27th place. At this event, Savitha also achieved her 4th WGM norm.
Savitha has represented India in various international events including the 2021 Online Olympiad, 2022 FIDE Chess Olympiad and 2023 Asian Games. She also bagged a bronze medal at the 2022 FIDE Women World Rapid Championship. Savitha is currently sponsored under the joint initiative, 64 squares, by Pravaha Foundation and MGD1.
